The Q were definitely gelled and tight on the whole spring 2001 tour and this night is no exception. My mind still reeling from the blowout show in d.c., we met up with Matt on the floor. the Q delivered a outstanding performance with phil smiling ear to ear, as were we...download this whole tour while you can...charlotte, Richmond, d.c., are all amazing...

I have to respectfully disagree with IC's review; I thought this show was chock full of crazy-massive jams. "Cumberland," "FOTD" and "Uncle John's Band" all push the 20-minute mark, and that's just the first set!
Like so many other heads, "The Q" is my favorite of all the Friends lineups, and in fact might be the best band I've ever seen live (never saw the original Dead or Allmans, to be fair). They just kicked so much ass and could literally do anything. But back to this show.
Both sets — and particularly the second — have a spacey off-kilter jam that keeps rearing its head again and again: you can hear it as the "Shakedown" jam starts to rebuild itself around the 12-minute mark; you can obviously hear it in the "Spacey Jam > Caution Jam," and they even veer into it a little during the encore in the "Scarlet" jam. Things start to run a little off the tracks, and they create an intricate, sometimes teeth-grinding musical tension.
Great band. Great show.

This was my second Phil show--far better than 10-2000 at the Mellon Arena w/ Dylan. The sound at Palumbo is notoriously bad but on this night it was fine. No real blowout jams, just solid beginning to end. Listen to Molo, the dude's an animal.

Subject: Phil Lesh- There is no substitute!
To begin, I want to say "thanks" to Phil for keeping on playing and letting us be able to download all of these shows.
I was at this show at the Palumbo Center (Go Duquesne!) and prior to that night, I hadn't seen any Phil and Friends shows. That last time that I saw Phil was with the Ohter Ones during the Further festival in 1998. So, needless to say, I was in for quite a surprise on this night.
To put it simply, Wow! Phil had been touring with this lineup for a while and these guys were on fire. My jaw just about dropped to the floor when I heard Phil's base line during Cumberland. I had forgotten just powerful Phil's playing was- There is no one like him! Jimmy and Warren were just sick with their guitars. The band sounded really tight during jams and through transitions to other songs. The setlist is cool for this night as well. I think that if you haven't downloaded it yet, do it. The sound quality is a little shakey, but that is because of the venue. I have downloaded another Phil Show from the Palumbo center and it has muffled vocals. I have to give this one five stars overall.
